Past Projects - 2018 Year

Sensory Storytelling

We ran a pilot project with Fusion and Communities First Llanelli at Cae Maen Day Centre, Llanelli. Working with adults who are living with disabilities. Gemma Alpine was a Junior facilitator with PSU who graduated from The Applied Drama course at UWTSD, Swansea. She supported PSU and Cae Maen Day Centre to create a welcoming and friendly experience, using drama and storytelling to bring people together through connection, expression and sensory experiences.

Lament of the Selkie

In 2018 PSU supported artists Rachel Taylor-Beales, Lucy Rivers and Bill Taylor Beales to undertake research and development project exploring personal storytelling and mythology. The project was funded by Arts Council of Wales and saw PSU and the artists working with women from our local and wider community. The outcome was a multimedia piece produced by Eleanor Shaw and was shown to an invited audience at PSU.

Women’s Voices

Spoken Word Saturday

2018 was the year we launched our Spoken Word Saturday events. In 2018 we started holding monthly sessions at our home at Ffwrnes Fach in Llanelli, now the Arts, Health and Wellbeing Hub. We invited guest artists to share stories and music and also to give space to our community to share their voice as well.

Sing and Tell

Following our pilot project in 2017, we continued our partnership working with Tenovus Cancer Care sing with us choir, and created a series of autobiographical storytelling sessions with participants.

There was a celebration performance held in July 2018 where audiences, friends and family of the choir could watch, laugh and cry as they listened to the stories and songs of The Tenovus Cancer Care Sing With us choir of Llanelli & Carmarthen.

The event was an openhearted, life affirming sharing of songs and stories of bravery, challenge and survival.

Our Founded and CEO, Eleanor, has the opportunity to be part of the Coracle Europe Literary Residency in Sweden and worked with writers and poets as part of The Kultivera Fringe festival in Tranas.

Carmarthenshire Voices

Carmarthenshire Voices was a digital storytelling and photographic project in 2018 working with older people in our Carmarthenshire community, gathering their stories, voices and images of them for an exhibition held in August 2018.
The project was funded by Arts Council for Wales, Llanelli Town Counci, Theatrau Sir Gar and Dementia Friends.

Birth Cafe

In July 2018, People Speak Up created the Birth Café programme which supported women and non-binary people to connect and share their birth stories in a supportive, gentle and creative environment.  It created a safe space for people to explore deep emotions, joy and sadness and an opportunity to reflect with others. The programme was also available online at later dates.

Story, Care & Share

In autumn 2018, we launched our first fortnightly Story, Care & Share sessions, invited adults who have a health or social condition to come to free workshops at Ffwrnes Fach to help find their voice and stories working with professional writers, poets, spoken word artists and creatives.
