PSU volunteer inspired to get moving and raise funds to help people living with Dementia

Katy Hocking from Carmarthen has been a volunteer with People Speak Up and has been helping it's Elevenses Carmarthen programme, which supports those living in the local community living with Dementia. Katy has been helping at the weekly Wednesday sessions at the Nurture Centre in Carmarthen for three months and wanted to raise money for Dementia UK.

Elevenses Carmarthen is a session and safe space for those on a dementia journey to come together and connect through sharing stories, art, music, movement, chatting and socialise at the same time.

Elevenses is a session for those who live with Dementia as well as carers / family members to come along to if they wish.

“I’ve seen how the sessions can be really rewarding and how much we need to support those and their families on a Dementia journey. I’ve been wanting to raise money for Dementia UK, and also something to motivate me to get moving. I saw that Dementia UK ran a 30 mile walking challenge and thought that was something that could help me start being active and help raise money for this worthy cause.” said Katy.

“Over the last few years I’ve really struggled to get motivated, and this has really spurred me on. I live in a beautiful part of Wales, and have enjoyed getting out and appreciating what is on our doorstep. It’s really helping me, but I know how important it is to raise funds for Dementia UK too.”

Katy has set herself a challenge to raise £250 for Dementia UK by the end of September by walking 30 miles. She is only a few miles off completing this challenge. If you would like to support Katy and donate, please visit
